The California Boulevard - Sector 29, Gurgaon/Gurugram

It might be a difficult to locate as The California Boulevard does not really fall in the usual Sector 29 Market but is a little far away. To remember its location easily, just head to the market right behind the IFFCO Chowk Metro Station.

I simply love the Californian ambiance and the way the owners have brought in a piece of America into Gurgaon. They have even put up a Harley outside the place and made a passage with the Stars of fame thing. The pictures that are hung on the wall remind you of Hollywood and so does the tram car Bar that has been set up.

The first TCB was set up in Rajouri Garden in New Delhi and the owners replicated their success in Gurgaon some time ago. The place is quite famous and is known for its food, which has taken inspiration from across the Globe. Indeed, with its interiors and feel, you would think of it as an American Diner.

Drinks

Signature Cocktails - Ordered Harley and Dead Bastard (Cool names for a drink). Dead Bastard is good and the bourbon and gin do taste well but Harley is the best of the lot. It is rightly bitter and tingles your throat. If going for mocktails try their drink which is Californian Punch I guess. It has vanilla ice cream in Cranberry juice and tastes yum. Summer Beach is good too.

Starters

We started off with Dilli Ki Chaat which is crisp spinach done up in Chat style with sev and yogurt. They have their own version of chilli paneer which I thought was superb. The cottage cheese tasted so fresh and they served it with  honey and chili sauce which complimented it quite well. They have a similar chicken dish,  Thai Wok Fried Chicken which was quite good. Both these dishes were the highlights of my meal. Chicken Adana Kebab is a newbie on the menu and is a welcome addition.

Main Course

I went for the Italian thing because Italian food is one of the specialties of this place. Peri Peri Chicken Pizza makes you feel so light, as in the taste of the bread is very minimal, Cheese and chicken are the dominant flavors. Pollo alla Parmigiana is a new addition to the menu and was recommended by the Chef. Boneless chicken is breaded and grilled with parmesan and mozzarella cheese which gives it a unique slightly salty but rich flavor. This is served with spaghetti and tossed vegetables. You really don't miss the Indian spices here with all the cheese. The Grilled Fish with Cheese with Herbs was a similar dish with Sole Fish grilled to perfection. The cheese when melts into the fish make it soft from inside and crunchy on the outside that you want a repeat. The only thing is that its so heavy and rich you can hardly eat the repeat.

Dessert

In Dessert, I had the awesome Chocolate Bomb which I had tried at another restaurant AM PM at Galleria recently. Here too, the chefs work the magic and bomb with chocolate, caramel, vanilla ice cream and walnut brownie.

Spill the Tea: Noor and the Silence After Doing Everything right

Noor has done everything she was supposed to do — moved out, built a life, stayed independent. Yet beneath the neat routines and functional success lies a quiet emptiness she cannot name. Part of the Spill the Tea series, this story explores high-functioning loneliness, emotional flatness, and the unsettling fear of living a life that looks complete from the outside. The verandah was brighter than Noor expected. Morning light lay flat across the tiles, showing every faint scuff mark, every water stain from old monsoons. The air smelled of detergent from a neighbour’s washed curtains flapping overhead. On the table, the paneer patties waited in a cardboard bakery box I’d emptied onto a plate. A squeeze bottle of ketchup stood beside it, slightly sticky around the cap. Two cups of tea, steam already thinning. In one corner, a bamboo palm stood in a large terracotta planter. Thin stems. Too many leaves. Trying very hard to look like it belonged indoors. Noor sat down and pulled the chair ...

Why do we crave bookshops when life falls apart? A deep reading of Welcome to the Hyunam-dong Bookshop

This article reflects on Welcome to the Hyunam-dong Bookshop by Hwang Bo-reum, a gentle novel about burnout, healing, and second chances. Through Yeong-ju and her quiet community, the book reminds you that meaning often returns slowly, through books, people, and ordinary days that begin to feel like home again. Why do so many of us secretly dream of walking away from everything? At some point, usually on a crowded weekday morning or during yet another meeting that could have been an email, you wonder if this is all there is. You did what you were told. You studied, worked hard, built a career, stayed responsible. And yet, instead of contentment, there is exhaustion. Welcome to the Hyunam-dong Bookshop begins exactly at this uncomfortable truth. Hwang Bo-reum’s novel does not shout its intentions. It does not promise transformation through grand revelations. Instead, it sits beside you quietly and asks a gentler question. What if the problem is not that you failed, but that you nev...
