Vegetable stew (Parsi-style)

Total time 30 minutes
Makes 6 servings

½ cup oil
2 large onions, chopped fine
1 large tomato, chopped fine
¼ tsp haldi
1tsp chilli powder
½ cup shelled and boiled green peas
½ cup cubed sweet potatoes
½ cup cubed potatoes
½ cup cubed suran or kand(purple yam; or use zimikand)
½ cup cubed carrots
6 whole small baby (or cherry) tomatoes (optional)
2tsp sugar
½ cup vinegar
3 green chillies, chopped fine (optional)
Salt to taste
1. Heat 2 tbsp oil. Fry onions till light brown, about 3 minutes. Add chopped tomato and cook for another 3 minutes. Stir in haldi and chilli powder; keep aside.
2. In remaining oil, sauté cubed vegetable separatery for about 10 minutes, or until tender. Mix vegetables, green peas and whole tomatoes with fried onion mixture. Cover pan and cook for another 2-3 minutes.
3. Add sugar, vinegar, green chillies (if using) and salt. Simmer for 5 minutes and serve hot at once, with rice, pulao or aapams.

Does India Need communal parties?

I think, it was Tan's post on this blog itself, Republic Day Event, where this question was raised. My answer. YES. we need communal parties even in Independent, Secular India. Now let me take you, back to events before 1947. When India was a colony of the British Empire. The congress party, in its attempt to gain momentum for the independence movement, heavily used Hinduism, an example of which is the famous Ganesh Utsav held in Mumbai every year. Who complains? No one. But at that time, due to various policies of the congress, Muslims started feeling alienated. Jinnah, in these times, got stubborn over the need of Pakistan and he did find a lot of supporters. Congress, up till late 1940's never got bothered by it. And why should we? Who complains? No one. But there were repercussions. The way people were butchered and slaughtered during that brief time when India got partitioned, was even worse than a civil war scenario. All in the name of religion.
