Water for Elephants: A Novel

Author: Sara Gruen Publisher: Algonquin Books, April 2007 This book was recommended to me by a friend who said she started reading it one weekend and then couldn't put it down. After having it around my house for several months, I finally picked it up last weekend and finished in the same time period. I won't say I was as engrossed in the story as my friend was; my reason was that I had a sinus infection and couldn't sleep. Still, it was a good book to curl up with, whether ill or well. Water for Elephants is ostensibly the story of a young man, Jacob, who in 1931 finds his world in ruins. He is a student of veterinary medicine at Cornell University. Just before he is due to sit his final exams he learns that both of his parents were killed in an automobile accident. At the reading of the will he learns that his parents had mortgaged the house in order to pay for his education and that, because his father had no other money set aside, the bank was repossessing...

Z. Jirotka - Saturnin

I was invited to write for this blog. It pleased me, but my English is by that time very simple and troubled. Admin of this blog pledged me, that my errors correct. Thank you for your pardon. My first point on this blog is about Czech author Zdeněk Jirotka and his book Saturnin. Who likes satire and English humor, it will book relish. Young man enlistes special domestic. Saturnin, domestic, early starts live of young man change and so brings his into humor situations, which do not match with his previous live. Who knows English writer P. G. Wodehouse and to be liked his style, it will cheerful. Saturnin was translated to English, Spanish and Italian.

Medieval mystery by marilisa

Hello, and thank you for inviting me to join this blog. I will 44 in 5 days and I have been reading since I was an infant (my parents and grand parents read to me as a baby). My husband and I have always gone to libraries for our dates. I have continued this tradition with our four kids who are all voracious readers. I have countless favorites. About 12 years ago, I developed a passion for medieval mystery. I read the entire Cadfael (12th century monk and herbalist)by Ellis Peters. These are meticulously researched scientifically and historically; they are also epic human interest stories. You're reading sound research in a palatable form; like the spoonful of sugar to get the medicine down! More recently I discovered Susannah Gregory Matthew Bartholomew series (14th century physician, trained in the east, whose practices are considered almost heretical by his contemporaries at Cambridge University. Lastly I have great respect for Connie Willis whose books border o...

For those who are proud of India

One song, four stories. Thats Rabbi Shergill's new song "Jinhe Naaz hai" for you. Saw this song in TV last week and I was immediately hooked. Yesterday, got a forward containing the song along with the lyrics. It tells the stories of four Indians who were subject to gross injustice. These were four cases which created a lot of controversies during the time they came out. The song starts with story of Bilqis Yakoob Rasool. During the Gujarat riots, this 19 year old girl's family of 14 was murdered, which included her little daughter also. If this wasn't enough she was gangraped. After such a gruesome torture, she didn't just resign to her fate and suicide. She decided to fight them in court and that paid off recently when some of the culprits including a policeman were convicted and given a double life sentence. Still, it won't be consolation enough for the trauma she underwent. Next is the story of Satyendra Dubey who was project director of the Nati...

Its that time of the year again when we all send messages to each other with all patriotic fervour. Our minds are full of thoughts about our country. The streets are filled with flag vendors. Almost every passing vehicle has a tricolour at the front. We even hang the flag in front of our houses. The internet is full of forwarded messages about the long struggle for freedom and the greatness of our country. The political parties are not far behind, conducting meetings with fanfare. But, beyond that are we doing anything worthwhile? yes, we do sit in front of the tv all day and enjoy all those film based programs and independence day special movie. On the auspicious eve of the New Year-2007, I wholeheartedly congratulate each one of you. Let Lord Rama’s Canopy of Grace always cover all of you! Let the Spiritual Master himself guide you on your Spiritual Path! Let the recitation of the Holy Name become the cardinal quality of your life. As our Love and Faith in God increases, our faith in Jaap and Simran becomes stronger and stronger. The Prodigal Daughter

Genre: Fiction Age Factor: 16 and Above This is a novel by Jeffrey Archer. It is interesting for almost half. But when the same type of incidents come over and over, it's a bit boring. it's all about a girls dream to become the president and her life from the time she's born till she finally becomes the president. Ofcourse, Archer has written in a beautiful way depicting the real incidents of the time including the World War II. Lot of detailed description of political processes and stuff like that. If you ask my opinion, I won't recommend the book 'coz I felt the story dragging and I skipped a lot at the end to complete reading it.
