Health Bits

BRAIN DAMAGING HABITS 1. No Breakfast People who do not take breakfast are going to have a lower blood sugar level. This leads to an insufficient supply of nutrients to the brain causing brain degeneration. 2. Overeating It causes hardening of the brain arteries, leading to a decrease in mental power. 3. Smoking It causes multiple brain shrinkage and may lead to Alzheimer disease. 4. High Sugar consumption Too much sugar will interrupt the absorption of proteins and nutrients causing malnutrition and may interfere with brain development. 5. Air Pollution The brain is the largest oxygen consumer in our body. Inhaling polluted air decreases the supply of oxygen to the brain, bringing about a decrease in brain efficiency. 6. Sleep Deprivation Sleep allows our brain to rest.. Long term deprivation from sleep will accelerate the death of brain cells. 7. Wuthering Heights

I have recently undergone the painful procedures of separation from the world of a brilliant book, and, even though I wish that the intense tale would continue for a period of eternity, it is lamentable that the raw and passionate story should end at all. Wuthering Heights is a book of many perspectives: of the worst human nature with the most intensely feeling ones, and the dispassionate, crude human form. This, Emily Bronte, has brought forth, fulfilling the author's very own purpose of her short tragic life, her death deeply mourned. Starting with the dark struggles of Heathcliff and Catherine's love for him, the book takes a melancholic and sad hue to it, following then yet another unhealthy obsession and ending with a hopeful one. Along with the gray setting of the sky's constant plummet, the atmosphere created never fails to perturb the reader. A classic fit to be described under Gothic fiction. Ielphil

The Indian Education System

This comes in direct response to the post put by Kartz on the education system of India, not that I don't feel that the system needs a "Revolution" or a "Revival", but I think, without understanding why we have such a system in the first place, trying to change it on the basis of its shortcomings purely may not necessarily lead to a more fulfilling educational system. Let's start with analysing the socio-economic condition of a majority of our population. A family that barely manages to scrape through the last days of a month does not think about living in palaces, rather their every waking moment is spent thinking on how to ensure a safe and decently comfortable future for themselves and their children.Their primary aim with regards to their children is to see them clear their courses and become capable of earning a decent living. This does not imply that they dont want their children to be the next Tendulkar or Kalam, it merely means that they want to first

The Indian Media And the Book world

۩ सर्व शकितमते परमात्मने श्री रामाय नमः ۩ ____ The way Indian electronic news media is growing perhaps the whole world knows about it. We have dozens of 24 hours news channels churning out breaking news one after another[which ultimately leads to a desire in the viewer's mind to break his television set.]* Sigh * But the point i want to raise is the way these people treat books and books news. You have Astrology shows, babas and gurus and an overdose of crime news, bollywood gossips, but books, where are the books on these channels? There is just one show, of half an hour duration, Just books on ndtv profit, a business news channel.Though its hosted by a senior journalist,SUnil Sethi, i don't approve of it much, but then its the only show. What a shame i say.You show us celebrity gossip and crime and astrology the whole day, but never a proper information on books. The small snippets we see, are of celebrity authors or when a celebrity is present on a book launch. Then also its

The Indian Education System

"Education is the manifestation of the intellect already in man" - Swami Vivekananda Youngsters in India, do not have the freedom of selecting there career, it is said. They are forced to become engineers, doctors, MBA’s and IAS officers, it is said. Yes, agree. But that is not the problem. The problem is, youngsters in India do not have the vision to think beyond. Neither their parents, nor their grandparents had that vision. This is where the root of the problem is. Generations have gone through a system which sucks. Now the beauty is even the law-makers and educators of today’s India are products of that age old system. That is why no less than a revolution is needed in the education system in India. Is it marks or intellectuality, which makes future secure and bright? The question is yet unsolved. Who knows whether a chap scoring 90 per cent would have a glittering future or a guy attaining 50 per cent have splendid opportunities? No one can answer this. The reason for

A Walk To Remember

It was a pleasant Sunday evening and after practicing a few RC passages (CAT beckons me), I felt the need to greet Lord Hanuman, residing just a few metres away from my house and it had been a long time since we met. I generally don’t visit temples wishing for things to happen because I believe, God understands my needs, recognizes my capabilities and bestows me with things I truly deserve. But when something really nice happens in life, I make it a point to thank Him in person for being with me and this visit was no different as He had blessed me with a lucrative offer from Tech Mahindra. On leaving the temple, I embarked on a walk which today, I feel is the most cherished and best reminisced. Even before leaving home, I had decided to take a walk in my locality (one of the evergreen places in Chennai – Ashok Nagar) and so pocketed my mp3 player. Music freshen my thoughts, I imbibe in me the enthusiasm to enjoy brought back memories. If ever I could experience an indeterminate sen

Some Thoughts...

1)The soul, aatma can find peace only if it approaches its owner, its bigger part, the Param-atma,bcz thats what it has been striving for since its creation, and that only is the sole purpose for its creation... 2)When there is darkness all around,in the past,in the present n even the future seems pitch black, only the eternal light can show the path...but the light will not come on its own,nor can anyone give it to you...you can be guided by the Gurus, but you have to yourself look for it...the external world will provide distractions,n then you'll put your soul's calling at the back of your mind, but eventually it'll call you back...thats why the worldly stuff can never give permanent happiness... 3)When life brings you over n over again at the same point, its trying to teach you something that you are not able to grasp...be good student...look for the answers...n move to the next chapter...the answers are within you...for God loves you so much that He put a part of His

Adopt what Is Right.....

I see that many people of my age group adopt certain western cultures. School students and college goers are often seen buying friendship bands and valentine cards. I feel its not right. You may think I am traditional and don't keep up to date views. But if you think a little maturely you will find out its not modern to wear friendship bands. Its rather pure pride. Now as I am talking about western culture I should tell you that I'm not against it in fact I find some of the western values very much followable like dignity of work, civic sense, accountability etc. We have to maturely decide what to adopt from the westerners and what not to adopt. Why should we go after them when we have a culture of such great versatility?

NATIONALISM AND PEACE/DESTRUCTION

Nationalism- the feeling of being a member of a nation, a feeling that can be deemed either patriotic or fanatic, depending on the extent to which the feeling degrades your ability to be sensible in making decisions on issues that may or may not directly concern the “Individual”. My doubt however is, why in the first place, did a need for such a feeling, such a sentiment arise? To usher in harmony and peace in a piece of land demarcated by boundaries drawn out of language, culture, traditions, lifestyles, food habits etc which in turn led to intolerance, disrespect and the urge to suppress the people of other “Kind” ? Was it to bring in peace or ring in bells of destruction of humanity as we understand it? Lets see.. Why did I feel the need to live in a society? I feel, I cannot survive on my own? No. I feel, I will have a more comfortable life if I depend on other people? Yes. Am I really open to other people depending on me? Well, maybe, but I would prefer to set some filters first

The OLympic Medal And all that hypocrisy

۩ सर्व शकितमते परमात्मने श्री रामाय नमः ۩ The Most boring thing happening these days is the olympic medal victory. Sheer shameless Hypocrisy * The most disgusting thing is presence of actor boxers in newsrooms, to tell you where who made the mistake and what really happened. * People are dancing up and down that a wrestler won a bronze medal.Do they know that he had won a silver medal in the 2006 commonwealth games?Had these very same people and news people rejoiced in a similar fashion when this very man had won an Arjuna Award. * Look at the facilities these people have grown up on.The government now so jubilant should hang their head in shame. * The media, especially the hindi channels have shown another low they can achieve.A boxer,Akhil lost the bronze medal, and they are discussing and criticizing why he lost that match. I am not a boxing fan, still i feel satisfied that someone had the guts, the spirit to wish a gold medal for himself and his country. If he lost, i don't

Kashmir and some intellectual blabber

'Kashmir'- the heaven on earth. 'kashmir'- the breeding ground of terrorists. 'Kashmir'-an issue that never goes out of fashion. 'Kashmir'- a subject for pseudo intellectuals to blabber their way to fame. So much for a state which is called as the jewel in the crown of India. What made me write this was a comment that renowned Indian writer Arundathi Roy made yesterday-"Kashmir needs freedom from India". She was speaking at a rally organised yesterday in Kashmir to push for the state's freedom. This preposterous comment, coming from a well-known Indian can affect India negatively in the world stage. I just can't understand what she thinks of herself. Messiah? or an one member world body who tells nations what they should do? Other than winning the booker prize for a load of crap, what are her credentials to speak about such a contentious issue of national importance? This latest talk-fest from her boneless tongue only re-affirms

The horrifying reality of Kashmir...!

The Amarnath Holy Cave (Will Bholenath unite Hindus to uphold Indian Integrity!!) “J&K on the edge”. “Jammu on the boil”. “ Paradise is burning”. “Who can stop this mayhem ?”. “Separatists on the rise in the valley”. “Situation back to 1989”…. . These are some of the responses of the visual media that tried to analyze the reasons that led to the agitation in Jammu and Kashmir region of the J&K state. The visual media – in all their ignorance- swore by the ‘Kashmeriat’ and the ‘secular model’ of Kashmir (read Muslims); Kashmir was described as an epitome of secularism to be emulated by each and every i

A note on Independance Day..

On any day of the year if you walk down the streets of any Indian city you will see people rushing about their businesses, kids running around enjoying their carelessness so on and so forth. There would be the sounds of men shouting on the street, cars honking, sounds of machines running etc. But what you would never hear on a day like that is music, specially patriotic music or the national anthem, being played loudly in the open for all to hear and the Tricolour being brandished from every possible nook and corner of the city around you. Its quite surprising how Indians wake up to celebrate their Independance Day and showing off their patriotic fervour only on 15th August. Every home, car and person would be brandishing the Tricolour on this day. You'll see kids running around waving the flag high and people paying a lot of respect to the flag and even saluting the flag like military cadets. You will notice a very strong love shown by the Indians towards the national flag, but th

A Pleasant Cozy in the Historic Style

The Death of Riley (a Molly Murphy mystery) Author: Rhys Bowen Published by: St. Martin's Minotaur, December 2003 I'd started reading Rhys Bowen's Evan Evans series some years ago, but I rather tired of them after reading only two. On a whim I picked up this book just to try something new. It's certainly pleasant to read and better than the average cozy I've seen on the shelves. The protagonist, Molly Murphy, is an Irish immigrant to New York city in 1901. She hasn't much money (a common theme in cozy mysteries) but she won't last in the very few jobs available to young women at the time (i.e., charwoman, servant, factory worker) and she has no references to become a governess, but she's got a strong personality and an independent mind (also a common theme) and decides she'll go to work for a private detective. A few weeks later, the private detective (Riley) is dead and she goes on the hunt for his killer. While this series indulge
Well, I have not been writing regularly for the blog, all apologies for that. But hey Tsshar, you were wrong, the blog has been a success. Ofcourse it has miles to go before it can be termed as the best. So many members have come in and share their views on the Society from the much hyped Nuclear Deal to Sports and everything concerning the youth in particular.

Eve teasing.....

I guess this is one issue that is rarely dealt with in forums of discussion. I thought of taking it up after my pal Poorvi narrated to me an incident she witnessed in a bus in Chandigarh. She was asking me, why could a girl not walk on the roads without the fear of getting molested, harassed etc..? Why could they not be treated with respect in this "Civilised" society ? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? ... And as you can see, to avoid answering her question then, I had to promise her an article on it. So here goes
